Bringing together the work of 10 artists the show examines the various ways art is used as a heteropological accessory, a mode realised by the gaze of the viewer, simultaneously representing and unpicking utopian ideals by channelling veins of the uncanny with fantasy, narrative, humour, styles of documentation.

South Africa is so hot right now!do not miss

Contemporary South African Art

How often do you get a chance to see South African art? Craft - yes, a lot, art - not a lot I would say. Well Geeta Chagan is on a mission to change that and she is starting in the hub or artyland - the one and only Vyner Street, having temporarily installed in Degree Art. And this is the final week. The show will end on Sunday 1 August (at 6pm). I think it's important to recognise the work that our African compadres are engaged with. Saatchi (not exclusively but most high profilely) has introduced us to Chinese, Middle Eastern and Indian art. I don't think he or his cronnies at the auction houses or high fashion art venues such as the Serpentine have seriously gone down the African route yet - not as financially opportunistic enough perhaps...who knows - I'd be interested to hear other people's opinion on this. Especially Chagan Contemporary's. Ok back to the actual exhibition -

The four artist exhibiting are:

Varenka Paschke (SA)
Jane Eppel (SA)
Norman O'Flynn (SA)
Francesco Nassimbeni (SA)

And according to Chagan:

'The artists blend traditional and conventional materials, Varenka Paschke works on traditional South African fabrics as well as those brought from her travels around the world, while Norman O'Flynn uses enamel and spray paint on plexiglass. Jane Eppel uses oil on canvas, but her canvases are thick and appear almost sculptural against the wall.'

Independent / Hackney Wicked / Pradowhat's going on?

Posted by Artfeelers Sat, July 10, 2010 09:58AM

Checking in from Madrid after a stop in Dublin and Disneyland Paris (which was brilliant I have to say, definitely recommend it, a total experience and with two kids in tow it was magical). Anyway the news is plentiful - first up yesterday´s Independent had a really cool review about Artfeelers mentioning Schwartz Gallery, artist Rosie Emerson, Ingrid Z´s Residence Gallery and James Taylor Gallery - read it here (please - short and sweet piece.

Next up news wise is Hackney Wicked festival - 30, 31 July and 1 August - so many art treats in store. I´ll be there helping with tours on the Friday and in the run up helping the very capable Anna Maloney with a little of the PR. If you have any queries about the festival please do get in touch.

Also do follow us on twitter - Hackney_Wicked and of course twitter.com/Artfeelers

Ok I do have lots more news but the Prado is calling and I am being (h) escorted there by me ol pal Evo!

I´ll be back soon. Apologies for the laxness lately.

Shoreditch's newest addition - Payne Shurvellwhat's going on?

Posted by Artfeelers Sat, June 19, 2010 01:40PM

Surprise! There's yet another gallery opened up in Shoreditch. But what's cool is that is a very very good space. I mean the space itself is pretty standard - white and square with a dinky office space at the back but it is in a gorgeous location - ubber urban and hidden behind the huge nasty amercian car wash in between Curtain and Great Eastern Road on Hewlett Road. The sort of place where you find a random gym...
What's most exciting about this place though is how serious James Payne and Joanne Shurvell - the founders and gallerists - are. They've very carefully chosen the artists featuring in their debut exhibition - 'A Bright and Guilty Place' - and they have chosen well.

Blog image

The usual scenario for group exhibitions is that you're happy/ lucky to see one or two pieces that you can connect with. With this exhibition the situated was inverted. All of the works bar one or two are a mixture of differing measures of beautiful/ engaging/ smart/ earnest, and all attest to the potential of Payne Shurvell. As I said James and Joanne have good taste and they're on a mission to spread it. I have a serious hunch they'll do well.

As per usual I'm not going to go into an indepth description of the exhibition or works at all - mainly because this blog is a sign post blog - but I have to say the two artists who really stood out for me are Mary Jacoob and LEO. I'm interested in hearing others' opinions when more of you have taken the initiative to check your A - Z and eek out Hewlett Road.

I'll be back there again for sure...oh yeah and before I forget - when you do go there please ask James or Joanne can you see the limited editions, they're really worth a look and you will no doubt have a good old chat about art if you are up for it.

Marc Quinn at the White Cube...kind ofwhat's going on?

Posted by Artfeelers Tue, June 15, 2010 02:33PM

I tend not to like to write about big gallery shows and Marc Quinn at the White Cube certainly qualifies for this category but I feel propelled to even though the exhibition left me cold. Was that the point? Are we supposed to feel empty? And now even though I want to write about it I am not exactly sure what to write. In fact I know what I want to do - I want to talk about it. I want the trigger of conversation - other people's opinions. I want a tutorial class where a slightly bored lecturer pokes and prods at your sleepy neurons and some quiet girl comes out with something cool that you hadn't thought about at all despite wanting to be the most perceptive!

Recently I went to a friends' (artist Ingrid Sanfey) crit session that she does with some other artist friends. Basically they are all recent(ish) graduates and want to continue the ritual of bouncing ideas off each other and the opportunity to see work and have their work seen by their peers. It was great. Really great. I am ashamed to say I can't quite remember the artists' exact names - Kit and David ... Kit Merit I think. Based in Schwartz studios in Hackney Wick, they were exhibiting a piece in Schwartz Gallery itself. The piece itself was fantastic - literally. An imaginary/ fantastical city scape made from odd bits and bobs of found discarded daily life debris. I loved it. But as I said, I also loved the banter about it.

It's true - nowadays especially in London - everything is fast. This was slow. Slow art. Slow conversation but in no way boring. Why is it that we equate speed with excitment and slow things with boredom...so I want to start a similar group. A similar process of art crits - of slow art. Take a piece of art (contemporary, currently exhibiting or an historical work like Massacio's Expulsion from Paradise for example) and grab some coffee and a few snacks and discuss it together for an hour - maybe an hour and a half. Wouldn't it be great to mix the group up a little too. Have some punters like me, some artists, some curators...some complete newbies.

It certainly would be more substantial an experience than my awkward little walk around Quinn's scultpures and forensic paintings as I am being watched shyly by 4 (yes 4) invigilators!

Ok so basically - I want to know - who is in? email me claire@artfeelers.com Blog image

Tom Hunter tonightdo not miss

Posted by Artfeelers Fri, June 11, 2010 11:19AM

On the night the world cup opens who would snub the pub to go see an artist talk? me, I would. Well actually photographer Tom Hunter's talk or conversation or whatnot (my new favourite word) is most likely on after the match - starting at 10pm tonight at the Rag Factory just off Brick Lane Heneage Street to be precise. It's followed by another tomorrow by Bjorn Veno and they're scheduled to attract interest for Jigsaw an exhibition of 31 young photographers.

Tom's work is great and he is a local man, a Hackney boy. http://www.tomhunter.org

Jigsaw looks good too - 'The work ranges from large-scale prints to books, of which there is a room upstairs where you can sit and relax while leafing through,' which souns nice. A nice alternative to the messy Friday nights you see spilling into the streets - wow I sound like an old grouch. You know what I mean though. Might see you there later tonight...

Lastly but certainly not leastly is Schwartz Gallery's newest install - Flesh - which seems to be more or less the work and life of Ronald Wright, who in his youth was a good friend to many of the stars and an artist illustrator. He is now a faith healer and in extraordinarily good shape for his 83 years... www.schwartzgallery.co.uk

Let’s face it, in London blinkers are a necessity to maintain a certain level of sanity. A big caveat to this however is missing out on the once offs. Like the burgeoning beginnings of a bright career. Like Jonathan Baldock’s...

His funky colourful hand crafted sculptures, mostly busts and figures, are a blend of references from Comedie del’Arte to Henry Moore’s reclining figures to contemporary sci-fi. They are unsettling to some, ‘darkly humourous’ according to the blurb. I imagine having one in your house staring at you through those freaky dolls eyes could well be disturbing, but in general the atmosphere at Cell Project Space is not so dark, more curious. Together perhaps, the works nomalize each other. Isolated they’d react differently.

The musician-slash-artist-slash-filmaker-slash-husband of famous artist Cindy Sherman (so I hear) is a dab hand at relaying his biking experiences and observations in an accessible and intelligent manner. The tone is really personable and all stuff you kind of know but don’t know the specifics. Not too wordy, not to fact heavy, perfectly paced...check it out if you can. Posted by Artfeelers Fri, May 07, 2010 03:24PM

Heimweh at Heimatmuseum - Claudia is an amazing german artist and this is her first solo show in the UK and it's on in East London. No. 3 Wilton Road, E2, 1 minute walk from the fabulous Broadway market. Exhibition on until this Sunday only!

Blog image
The German title Heimweh consists of two words. “Heim” means home and “weh” stands for balefulness. In combination, “Heimweh” can be translated into “Homesickness”.
“Heimweh” for the artist has a double meaning:
Firstly, it refers to the longing inherent in a domestic household, which implies typical feminine instincts like nest building, or decorating, which is more likely parented to a human attitude through by our society. The ambivalence between the desire to conceal “the self” behind the subject of ownership, by building a palliative to the frustration, the lack of confidence or even self-disgust, and the inevitable transparency it brings, remains a feature of Claudia’s pieces.
On the other hand, “Homesickness” would refer to the inner soul, the space closest to childhood and innocence. Claudia describes it as a nostalgic process of returning, as Heimweh too.
...

Claudia presents herself as a fairytale book, giving the viewer the opportunity to flip through the pages of her personal environment, heavily influenced by human behaviours and poetically diverted by her imagination.
You penetrate the flat, as Claudia’s visceral, experiencing her deepest secrets and hidden world...

Fraser Muggeridge (what a Harry Potter name) at the fabulous Kaleid Editions...

KALEID will present 'Designed by Fraser Muggeridge studio, an
exhibition of 48 new books, co-produced by Samantha Y. Huang' this day next week, Tuesday 30th March, 6-9pm, in their delightful space on Redchurch Street near Brick Lane....

Here's the official line(s) from Samantha, who is a fantastic artist herself, (I will follow up next week after I have seen them.. can't wait!):

'Fraser Muggeridge studio is responsible for an expansive range of artists’
books, monographs, exhibition catalogues, posters, maps and invites. The
studio prioritises artists’ content to avoid a studio signature style.
Images and texts sustain their own intent and each project is approached
with an elegantly pared-down aesthetic.

Through Designed by Fraser Muggeridge studio the ‘new’ books fashion a
peculiar retrospective. Each book is, in fact, an amalgam of 48 selected
publications dating from 2001 to present, designed for clients including
Bookworks, Lund Humphries and Tate Publishing forming a unique volume of a
larger series.

Each book becomes a singular visual palimpsest as text and graphic
contrast and contradict while books within books challenge each other for
meaning. Sequential coherence is transformed into a play between word and
colour as pages of different sizes do battle for dominance against
disorder.

Eric Kindel provides a contemplative introduction to the concept: ‘...
strange combinations, contradictions, arrangements nearly bad; not
pastiche, but sort of, not homage, but sort of; history, but now.’'

All 48 books will be installed at KALEID from 31 March until 25 April
2010, and will be available for purchase alongside an exhibition of the
original publications.

For more info on Kaleid and their almost weekly drop in workshops check out their website - http://www.kaleideditions.com

Approach in the Approach on the Approach (Road)what's going on?

Posted by Artfeelers Mon, March 22, 2010 02:21PM

I am a fan of short films - why can't we see them in the cinema more often? No matter for now though, I'll bring that up another day when I have time to do something about it.

One short film you should see over a nice ale or stout or fruity juice this Wednesday is A night out at the Approach - 1962 - screening at the Approach pub on the Approach Road in Bethnal Green, E2. Really looking forward to this. I nearly think I'll see my Dad sitting at the bar...

And not sure how short or long this Documentary is but sounds interesting and accompanied by a photo exhibition (thanks for the info Cristina of exit strategies); The story of villa Milada, one of the best known and long lasting squat in czech republic, began 1st May 1998. The photo exhibition is about the brutal eviction happened in September 2009. it's screening at one of the best new creative spaces in the East End - 195 Mare Street. I would like to know more about squatting in different countries so this could be a way to learn a little more -

Graffiti/ Street Art does seem to have a similar pull to the comic book geekiness o combinign the two seems natural. Popped into the opening of Pure Evil's new exhibition Fantastic Four last night. It was a nice little gathering, with the downstairs storeroom looking area opened up and someone painting and spraying directly onto the walls - I didn't get his name - and lots of familiar work from street artists active all over East London.

Blog image

In celebration of the exhibition Pure Evil are also giving away a free comic book download...click here to see all

Before this I went to see something very different - Céleste Boursier-Mougenot's New commision for the Curve Gallery at the Barbican. Lots of cute as hell birds flying around musical instruments. It was most interesting for me not from a sound art or bird art or whatever art point of view but simply watching birds interact with a non-bird environment - like how they were trying to make a nest behind a fire extinguisher. They are a number of signs saying it has been checked by the relevant bird looker after authorities. But to be honest even though it may not be cruel accoding to our consensual warped idea of what is not cruel - it was definitely weird for them, surreal. They were a few little Zebra Finches cowering in corners and it made me wonder...

Apparently it's a huge youtube hit - the exhibition clip that is. I do think it is going to be one of those - 'did you see that bird exhibition in the barbican last year' type events in London so even to stay in the know it's worth seeing, keeping up with the art joneses and all. I would like to hear someone tell me why it is such an aesthetic triumph though. Honestly. I'd be interested. It is interesting.

Tamsynettes by Tamsyn Challenger, now at Transition Gallery, is defintely worth a visit

Blog image

Inert puppets, motionless and emotionless, are freaky. But the Tamsynettes are not, not to me anyway...

Tamsyn lets us ease ourselves into the space between her sculptures and the interpretations we might alight upon when contemplating them.

Tamsyn's interest in fairytales could be the answer to this subversion. Fairytales that wrap up violence, package and polish it, delight in it and make it suitable for all the family must surely be an important ingredient in the Tamsynette recipe. The artist is onto something for sure, but I feel like this is just the start of the story, part of the conversation. Perhaps Tamsyn herself is going to continue it or perhaps it is up to us the audience to take our cue and do what we like with the puppets. Project, reflect, inject, subject...just as we do with real people whose strings are, for the most part, invisible.

read my full review here on Spoonfed and I look forward to hearing what you think about the exhibition.

The Tamsynettes is at Transition Gallery until 18th April 2010.

Posted by Artfeelers Fri, March 05, 2010 03:50PM

Really looking forward to going to seeing how Chris Hammonds 2010 experiment for MOT is going this weekend. the space is open to artists and curators to intervent essential for the year - to quote the websit explanation ...

"2010 will be slightly different at MOT International, in that under the umbrella of a one-year experiment, the gallery will dispense with conventional programming. It is intended that through this abandonment of traditional exhibition programming the gallery will be able to react to ideas from artists and curators almost immediately, with projects merging and usurping each other in a free-form reaction to current ideas edited by the director. This means that projects do not have to fit into traditional exhibition timescales, they can collide, interact and even cancel each other. The most interesting works supersede their successors. Works can come and go over the year."

I got a message to say Rise Art http://www.riseart.com/ are following me on Twitter. Which first of all reminded me that Twitter exists and I am not using it properly but also that I have been neglecting to blog about information like this - so muchos apologies.

Seemingly Rise Art is platform to showcase new art and anyone can submit:

- Artists register to have your work reviewed directly by a curation board of international art experts.

Featured artists will have their art endorsed and showcased on the site, win a cash prize, and receive a majority of income from the sale of their original works of art. -

I'm not sure if there is a catch. There doesn't seem to be one. But check it out for yourself.

They're classy little numbers and it will be interesting to see how long they stay up. Unfortunatley I can't find much info on who the Pure Wrist is....

If you want to see what else we saw on our tour last Satuday have a peek at the Artfeelers Gallery

Blog imagephoto by Dara Herlihy (thanks a million Dara) of artist Heather Cantrell and subject at MOT GalleryBlog imagephoto by Dara Herlihy of all us artfeelers chatting with curator Caryn Coleman

during our trial tours we got fantastic feedback from our artfeeling guineapigs - (thank you Gareth, Kat, Chris, Aoife, Ali, Manuela, Alicia, Bill, Val, Chloe, Emily and Jess and of course Viv and Dara). we won't go on about it too much but here's a couple of quotes:

"I really enjoyed the tour. It was great to see something completely different to the more obvious galleries like the Tate Modern, National Portrait Gallery, etc. I especially liked seeing the photographer in action and experiencing the less glamorous/real London art scene - I would never have gone into that building expecting to see a studio and a gallery."

"I was so overawed by the coolness of the ‘study in portrait’ that I walked around in a bit of an ‘art mist’ until we hit the pub and had a chance to properly talk about it."

don't miss out - email us at claire@artfeelers.com - now!

Heather Cantrell is a dude, as is Caryn Coleman - respective artist and curator of A Study in Portraiture: Act II at Chris Hammond's MOT Gallery - on right now

Act I was in Los Angeles, Act II here, Act III will be in New York. why does it sound like a play? well its extremely theatrical as is the history of portraiture as Heather points out. she is photographing her art tribe in London - artists, curators, dealers, collectors in a series of live shoots in MOT's actual gallery space using Heather-picked props and Heather-painted backdrops and surrounded by the photos from LA's Act I. it does not get much cooler than this - get yourself over to Regent Studios beside Braodway Market, London Fields to see it - as always check the website first.

Blog imagewhen you go - it would be nothing short of stupid to pass through without seeing the fantastically fun paintings by Jake Clark (see image), Phillip Allen and Rose Wylie, at MOT's neighbour Transition Gallery.

cosy art cabin on Hackney Roadwhat's going on?

Posted by artfeelers Mon, December 07, 2009 02:40PM

it's hard to do something different in London - everyone is doing something different. we're all trying to trump each other -

but Tom Wellseley really is - with his shipping container unit plonked on a tiny tennis court on the Old Street/ Shoreditch High street end of Hackney Road. Tom has been gradually making and putting in furniture, shelves, seats and a video installation. it really is cosy.
the cabin/et makes reference to the ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ – a type of 18th century museum that presented artefacts from new colonial territories.

also check out the tennis ball marks on the side of the unit!

i can't keep up with the bar(t)gains. recession time meets christmas time meets less materialist consuming. people seem to be looking for alternatives to the hell of oxford street in the run up to xmas. the christmas art market at Yinka Shonibare's Guest Projects space, art barter london (which was really good, pity it was just for the weekend, it should be an ongoing thing) and now art for kunst at the old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane

Blog image

i fear artfeelers blog will turn into a shopping site if i keep blogging about these events. but then when i see other people doing what artfeelers is all about - which is not just talking about opening art up to as many people as possible but actually doing it i have to give them a happy nod. art for kunst is bringing top street and graffiti artists to you through handsome and pretty affordable box sets. if you're into graf art or no one someone that is - pop down to the art forkunst stall. ps i think kunst means art in german. not sure. i don't want to ask google. i want to ask you? is it?

open thurs - sun through december. check their website for more info and exact times

Paul Trevor's Photographs at the Museum of Childhooddo not miss

Posted by artfeelers Mon, November 23, 2009 12:34PM

you have just one week left to get down to see these photographs of the east end showing at the Museum of Childhood. i'm fighting with myseylf to not say that they are gorgeous because that sounds soppy and they are so much more. the kids in the photos are fantastic subjects; funny and unaffected. quite different to the usual suspects we find down brick lane nowadays, but it's all part of the fun eh! the run-down backdrops are also worth our attention. it still has that pst war feeling even though they're from the 70s.

Blog image

what's also funny is that I am sure a lot of the people who are in the photos are walking around the east end totally oblivious to the fact that they are stars in an exhibition on their doorstep. has any attempt been made to track down these kids? does anyone know? no excuses now - get down there MOC is right beside Bethnal Green tube.
on until 29 November 2009

while you are there please also get up to the first floor to see the East London Printmakers exhibition on fairytales - Wonderland. great to see their work on show - any more ELP exhibitions planned?

Monorex Secret Warswhat's going on?

Posted by artfeelers Thu, November 05, 2009 07:08PM

If you haven't heard about these guys yet -

Blog image

you'll definitely be hearing a lot more soon. Monorex' Secret Wars are a global phenomenon at this stage. Don't take my word for it - youtube them. the format is - 2 artists going head to head creating on-site art works, as in directly onto the walls of the venue, at each battle. there's tournaments, semis, finals etc. the atmosphere is fantastic. in general, at the end, the crowd decides which artist wins.

yesterday at the Hoxton Pony in shoreditch the set up was slightly different - it was a commisioned 'secret war'. not a real battle. but the place was still buzzing. it's actually something i've always wanted to see done - art made as exciting as live music. live art that's not just used as entertainment (like a dodgy performance artist). it really is the next big thing - and rightly so. Reeps, beatboxing champ, did his thing too and he was brilliant. genuinely. check out monorex'secret wars diary - now!

fantastic article in Frieze mag by Fritz Haeg about people basically ruining all the fun by trying to over-determine what art is. definitely not another 'is it art' drivel article. he's the real deal. must check out his work when the chance next arises

if you subscribe to Frieze you can read the essay here. if not it should be in your local library or you could buy it - it ain't a bad mag after all...

the image above shows one of Haeg's slides which looks intriguing - not sure it if means 'slide' as in format of an image or a fun 'wahoo' slide. it's nice to see photographers shadows sometimes

(thurs 29 oct - just checked the link above - if you click in you can actually read the full article online for free - you don't have to subscibe)

hoo hoo haa haa (repeat)

we all know the horrors of 21st century London all too well ...or do we?

Indy east end art group Cosmicmegabrain have a history of creating art experiences that you will never forget - whether it's watching or getting in on the action of feather dusting someone's testickles as they hang suspended (still attached to their naked owner) out of a kennel or standing in front of a breath-taking video/3-D installation made from one of the curators bedrooms or watching breakdancers blow minds in a Beirut gallery (in the video above - about 2mins18secs)

this time round with 'Dondon Lungeon' Cosmicmegabrain are artifying our terrifying London existence in a very-well-hidden-big-white-art-cave-behind-a-petrol-station in Shoreditch

artists contributing their gruesome reactions to Cmb's bonegrinding brief include Jonathan Silverman, Chiara Mu, Davide D'Elia, Taren MacCallan-Moore, Jesse Wade, Ada Chinonye...

you will absolutely not want to miss out on this one - sounds like contemporary art punchdrunk with a bitter twist of London. it's a typically one night only affair. like an artfirework, it will dazzle, delight and disappear

so get rsvping artfeelers to invite@hoxton.ne (guestlist only) - 31 October from 10pm till late
